Art history

Art historian and critic, born in Lvov on 8th May 1940. He took a degree in history of art at the Wrocław University in 1966. Since 1964 he has been working at the National Museum in Wrocław (since 1983 as its director); received many research grants: France 1973, Italia 1978, Benelux 1980, Great Britain 1984, USA 1988 and Switzerland 1990. A member of the Association of Art Historian, the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), the International Museum Committee (ICOM), the editorial council of the monthly magazine 'Odra'. He has served on the academic boards of the National Museums in Krakow, Poznań and Warsaw, the Royal Castle Museum in Warsaw, Ossoliński Institution in Wrocław and on the museum advisory board to the Minister of Culture. He is an expert in the field of museum management, also popularizes contemporary art in Poland and abroad. Throughout years he has built up a representative collection of 20th century art at the National Museum in Wrocław. As a director he executed a thorough reorganisation and refurbishment of the Museum, what resulted in new versions of permanent exhibitions. He initiated a number of scientific studies (catalogues of the collections and catalogues of thematic and one-man exhibitions) and is known as the author of several hundred exhibitions of Polish contemporary art in Poland and abroad, including presentations at International Festivals of Art (Sao Paulo 1977-1989; Cagnes-sur-Mer 1975-1996; New Delhi 1986-1998). Works displayed by him were often awarded the highest prizes. He published numerous studies and articles on contemporary art, among the most important are: 'W kręgu surrealizmu' (1975), 'Art at the Edge' (1988), 'Artyści Wrocławia 1945-1970' (1996), 'Między ekspresją a metaforą' (2000), 'Kondycja ludzka' (2001). Exhibitions and publications by Hermansdorfer were rewarded on frequent occasions, e.g. at competitions for the Museum Event of the Year organized by the Ministry of Culture. For his achievements he was created Knight of the Polonia Restituta Order (1998). Amongst other honours he received the City of Wrocław Award (1986), Award of the Mayor of the City of Wrocław (1993) and the Minister of Culture Award (2001).
