Józef Gielniak


1932 - 1972


Joseph Gielniak was born in a family of Polish immigrants in France, there has finished school, he studied for a year in the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts in Vallenciennes. The English came in 1950 with the intention of studying at the Faculty of Konsularno-Dyplomatycznym in Warsaw. In their plans, however, had to resign because of lung disease. In the age of 21 came to a sanatorium in przeciwgruźliczego Bukowcu near Kowary in Lower Silesia, where he spent almost the entire adult life, there arose all its graphics. Architecture and its surroundings were also the main sanatorium motifs of his works, though not always taken literally. Carer artistic Gielniaka was professor Stanisław Dawski, rector of PWSSP in Wroclaw, who first became interested in his work and as noted Gielniak "triggered his work." His art is behind his life was considered by critics to be a phenomenon unique in the world. The climate of his works association with the work of Bosch, Ensor, Gaudi, works Kafka, Schulz and, above all, the mountain Czarodziejską Thomas Mann.
