Leszek Mądzik, theatre director and stage designer, was born in 1945 in Bartoszowiny, in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. He studied at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), earned his master’s degree at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Białystok, and his doctorate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2010 he was awarded the title of professor on the motion put forward by the Council of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1969 he founded the Scena Plastyczna KUL, staging many new productions. His theatre has participated in more than 50 international festivals, receiving many awards and commendations. In 1986 he founded Galeria Sztuki Plastycznej KUL, where exhibitions showing the work of many of the most remarkable modern Polish artists have been held. Mądzik has produced many stage designs for Polish, Portuguese, French and German theatres. He is a member of the Association of Polish Art Photographers. He designed the Museum of Modern Sacred Art in Kielce. He has also designed many posters and graphic designs for books. He has been awarded many distinctions including the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Cross of Merit, the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, and a special honourable mention in the Totus awards.
