Rafał Malczewski

1892 - 1965

Rafal Malczewski not walked the footsteps of his father (one of the most famous Polish painters). Not done any art school, but the workshop taught him the best of the best. Was seen as a painter-amateur. Left behind an impressive achievements in many areas of creativity and with an unusual life.

On return to the great artists of the twentieth century Pantheon, waited a long time. It was only in 2003, the Austrian curators "discovered" by Rafal Malczewski for the present, thanks to an exhibition of Polish art interwar period. Much earlier, he has 30 years, foreign criticism it the most promising and talented Polish artist, a picture of "Spring in the mountains" has brought him the Grand Prix at the international exhibition in Paris in 1937.

He studied in Vienna at the faculty of philosophy, but also know the architecture and agriculture. In 1917, he moved permanently to Zakopane. His colorful personality perfectly fit into the bohemian world of Zakopane. Friends include with Witkacy and Karol Szymanowski.

He was versatile. Known as a writer and poet, author of radio dramas, reporter and columnist (more than one hundred articles). The film, which created a scenario ( "white footprint", 1932, dir. A. Krzeptowski) was awarded at the International Film Festival in Venice. He was also engaged in design, such as scenery, the 'Sonata spectra "by A. Strindberg and practiced extreme sports (it belonged to the race car or ski jumping). But the greatest fascination Rafal Malczewski were up. He came in not as a "mountaineer and skier, remained there as an artist and writer." Was among the first members of the Tatra Voluntary Rescue Ambulance. But in 1917, when the tragic accident has lost a friend, and he miraculously avoided death, resigned to the climbing. Mountains remain an eternal longing and inspiration.

After the outbreak of World War II Rafał Malczewski chooses emigration. First, go to France, then go to Brazil, finally, by the United States to settle permanently in Canada (1942). 26 years of emigration, mainly to the memories and Mitologizacja skrawka lost ground, "world navel" - named as the written chronicle of that era. Also noted by akwareli, even if przebyty stroke (1957) limited the freedom of his painting. Akwareli not treated as works of art. There were souvenirs, and memories of its commercial products "from landscape." Views of the Tatra Mountains, Podhale krajobrazom have to give way to Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Parany, then the Canadian mountains St. Lawrence and rocky mountains.

Of the thousands of paintings and watercolors was able to discover or describe not so much. The work of the years 1918-1920 there are only in reviews, many remain dispersed around the world in private collections.

Rafal Malczewski painting way led by the aesthetics of Cubism and Futurist. Experimenting with space and perspective. Syntetic and geometric forms. How to use expressionist contrast, intense colors. In the early paintings topics, such as merry-go-round. Dominated, however, empty landscapes or sleepy town. Landscape unique features by adding items from the world of technology (telegraph lines, railway rails). Cycle is a much different "Black Silesia" (1934-1935), in which there is already a symbiosis between nature and the industrial world. Lighter shades will be in subsequent images (40) showing the Central Industrial District (1938). Even in exile to the world of sports themes will include landscapes and flower motifs.

The artist wrote about his paintings as a parallel visions of reality, the synthesis of sensations and colors. Today, looking at the kind of style icon, an artist - "Auto winter landscape on the background" (1930) - it is easy to be an impression that Rafał Malczewski ahead of time. There is on the boundary, contemporary, magic realism.
