He was born in 1941 in Bieniawa near Tarnopol (in the eastern borderlands.) Came to the lands recovered in 1946 while residing in Paczkow (District Nysa).

In 1960 he graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. In the years 1960-1966 he studied the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Department of Painting and Graphics. Painting and architecture, he studied under prof. Wacław Taranczewski and graphics with prof. Mieczyslaw Wejman. Graduated with honors in 1966. Promoters of his thesis were: Wacław Taranczewski, Czeslaw Rzepiński, Jonasz Stern and Hanna Rudzka-Cybisowa.

Since 1966 a member of the Association of Polish Artists. He has tens individual exhibitions: Gallery "Rhythm" - Krakow (1969), Regional Museum - Przemysl (1976), Cultural Centre. C.K. Norwid - Krakow (2001), Gallery "Turley" - Krakow, Poland (2006), Museum of Sport in Warsaw (2011).

Gerlach paintings can be found in many museums and institutions, as well as in private collections at home and abroad, including: Canada, USA, France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, South Africa.
